His faction, the lawful Lord's Alliance, have no idea. They believe Strahd is dead.
Legendary badass Laeral Silverhand, Open Lord of Waterdeep, accepted Hornblade's request to govern Barovia in Lord's Alliance's name.
Captain Ulduar "Flamefist" Neverember defend their new Barovian heaqdquarters at Castle Ravenloft.

The small number of Lord's Alliance individuals and Knights are accompanied by a group of
4 Adult Bronze Dragons.
Runara the Tall is their leader. She serve a higher cause; the ancient war between Devils and Dragon kind.
It's not rare to see Bronze Dragons working together with Lord's Alliance, but Runara is determined to find out the truth behind Strahd's demise.
Her companions are her partner Felgolos the Joyful, adopted protégé Zelifynn, and old Umsheryoth the Blind.
MONSTER HUNTERS
WANTED!
- Dangers & Rewards guaranteed -
Barovia might seem easy to govern, with adult dragons in tow.
Alas, centuries of Strahd's rule have left these lands deeply cursed and filled with all manners of nightmarish creatures.
Across the Sword Coast and beyond, word has spread that Lord's Alliance offer bountiful reward for the hunting of evil in Barovia.
So they come, from far and wide, to the little town Vallaki and Blue Water Inn.

Urwin Martikov, the famous wheelchair Innkeeper of Blue Water Inn, have gone terminally ill and now count his days.
As if that wasn't bad enough, his wife Danika have been accused of being a Vampire Cultist and brought to Castle Ravenloft.

She welcomes the presence of Lord's Alliance, and uses her wealth to help the people of Vallaki.
Her son Nikolai help newly arrived adventurers, and provide them with missions.
VALLAKI FAMILY
To Burgomaster Victor Vallaki the Lord's Alliance merely replace one tyrant with another. His plot to use Necromancy to rival Strahd's power is now aimed at Lord's Alliance. Behind the facade of a spoiled brat, Victor scheme a wicked takeover.
Unknown of his Master's plan, Izek Strazni, Bugbear and Captain of the Vallaki Townsguard, remain loyal. As Victor's henchman, Izek strain against Lord's Alliance's control in Vallaki.

Haunted Woods

REVENANTS OF ARGYNVOST
Sir Godfrey Gwilym and his fellow knights were killed by Strahd during an assault on Argynvostholt 300 years ago.
Vengeance kept Godfrey and a few others from passing on, instead they haunt the area near Argynvost; because they cannot stray too far from this place without loosing their physical form.
VASILKA THE FLESH GOLEM
A low-ranking angel came to Barovia, disguised as an Abbot, to help its people but the lands soon turned him insane. The idea that finally brought on his demise, at the hands of Strahd, was to create a flesh golem bride for the Vampire Count.
Vasilka live in an abandoned abbey above Krezk. Whenever she's angry, sad or stressed she unwillingly turn into a large flesh golem monster. The howls of pain and sorrow have sprouted rumours that the abbey is in fact haunted.

Cursed Bogs
BABA LYSAGA
She nursed Strahd when he was a baby, and watched him grow into a mighty ruler. Through raw wisdom and her many spies, Baba Lysaga have become aware that Hornblade is responsible for the imprisonment of Strahd.
The bog has answered her call. It's awakening. Countless blight cratures, and evil treants. Soon they'll be unleashed upon Vallaki, then Castle Ravenloft. She doesn't fear the bronze dragons, oh no, her dragonsbane potions are brewing.
The werewolf pack

BOLEIKA TORANESCU
Her parents were killed by Strahd for opposing Kiriklov's father, who were an abusive tyrant as pack leader. Fuelled by vengeance she became a formidable fighter, hoping to one day kill Strahd herself.
Now Boleika aim that hate toward her new oppressors, Lord's Alliance. She propose the pack should fight back until this land is truly theirs.
KIRILKOV STOYANOVICH
He grew up witnessing the brutality of his father's leadership. When the time came for Kirilkov to inherit that leadership he decided to instead rule with compassion and forgiveness.
He propose the pack remain passive and weather out the storm. Loved by most, a growing minority would prefer to see the strong fighter Boleika as leader.

Strahd's loyal chamberlain and brother in arms. Rahadin is a Rouge Warlock with high charisma and dexterity, who favours swordplay and necromatic abilities.
As a dusk elf exile, Rahadin helped Strahd's father conquer the dusk elf kingdom.
For Rahadin, loyalty towards Strahd's bloodline is everything. To this cause he has slain thousands, and will slaughter more to preserve the Zarovich legacy.
Now his goal is to punish all those who made the defeat of Strahd possible. Mageking Hornblade shall suffer.

One of Strahd's most powerful Vampire Spawn. Cruaruan Qelqiroth is a Wizard Paladin, with high intelligence and charisma, who favour heavy armour and devastating spells.
He grew up in Laerakond and the Dragon Sea. When he came of age the Elders chose him for Tazgar Priprax, basically a suicide mission where the young Dragonborn must venture as far as possible to gather enough knowledge to be worthy of returning.
Cruaruan learned about Strahd and entered Barovia with hopes of becoming his disciple.
